Well here goes (try and stay awake)

Ok this goes back to 2014 when my eldest daughter was 17. At the time we had a LR Disco as a family car and a Golf R32. I was adamant that Beth should drive even though she was less than keen to put it mildly. Anyway I couldn't get insurance on either car to cover her so the Golf had to go and we ended up with a bright red Fiesta 1.25L :o To compound the ignimony she gave up after 3 lessons and then went off to Uni!!

So in 2015 I sold the Fiesta and took out a personal lease on a Golf GTD which is going back to VW in December this year as the contract is coming to an end. So in May this year I decided I was going to buy a petrol engined car (I've had enough of diesel) that was quick so I naturally looked at the Golf R as I'd pretty much always had VW's right back to the Mk 1 GTi.

Now I must tell you that this is also the car that my wife would be driving for most of the time. So we sat down at the computer one night and went through the VW configurator to get a build code. I left Becky; my wife, to make a cup of coffee having agreed on the engine and colour and wheels. At that point the car build price was approx £36k. When I came back in with the coffee the car was now £47k  It seemed that every option had been selected including an incredibly expensive exhaust and a performance pack. Now keep in mind that the car will spend a significant part of it's life going to Tesco and back! I did ask why you needed upgraded brakes to do that but can't quite remember the response. Far be it from me to argue so after a bit of carwowing we ended up with a good discount at my local(ish) VW dealer. I then popped over there and ordered my new Golf; all was well in the world. That was May 1st this year (to allow for VW build times).

I received a phone call from the dealer at the end of May to inform me that they hadn't yet ordered the car as one of the options my wife had chosen was not yet available in the UK despite being on the UK website. I was informed that it would be available in August and not to worry  On September 1st I went to the dealer and was told that there was no more information and that the chances of getting the car before the GTD went back were slight. After a number of frustrating phone calls with VW UK I decided to look at the RS3 as it had been in the back of my mind even when we were 'ordering' the Golf R.

The VW dealer was fine and gave me the deposit back and then I went onto the Audi website and built an RS3 but this time NOT leaving my wife alone!! I then did the carwow thing again and soon realised that there is pretty much no discount to be had on the RS3 :(

Well you only live once so went with the dealer who I felt most comfortable with (Swindon Audi) and ordered the car. Within a week i had an official order number and my car is being built week commencing 16th October and should be at the dealer in the first week of November - WOW, BOOM :11:

I now have to get my Golf GTD back early as I don't want both cars!

So I will shortly be an RS3 Sportback owner reg R R53 BOO with the strap line TESCO AND BACK WITH 400BHP

Spec is pretty much everything except the upgraded seats and ceramic brakes which neither of us are keen on. Oh and its glacier white

Sorry it was a bit lengthy

Very excited

Si

Lovely car and you’ll enjoy it......every trip is an ‘event’.

I went the the other way from an 8V RS3 to a Golf R FL.

Love both cars for different reasons.

Welcome to the OC Si.

A blessing in disguise with VW as far as I'm concerned. The Golf R is a great car, but the RS3 is another level all together.

Glacier White - brilliant choice too. 👍

Hello and welcome!

If I'd left my Mrs speccing up the car I'd have Christian Louboutin seats and a Jimmy Choo optics pack or something!

Just an update as I now have the RS3 - picked up last Monday from Swindon Audi. Firstly had the car properly cleaned and detailed then had an Autowatch Ghost system fitted.

Just a couple of things to note. As I left the dealers and got to the first junction as I braked there was a squeal sound! Only happens occasionally and at low speed only. Discs by the way are round and are NOT wavy.

Can't seem to find a service book in my car wallet, I assume the car comes with a service record book as well as the thick information manual?

Lastly; probably me being a bit dim, but I can't get the radio to display any text saying what's playing and the normal info you get with a DAB radio. Works a treat on my Golf GTD but not on the Audi! Got the logo up but that's it. Have set radio text but makes no difference. Is this an Audi thing?

Will post some pictures once I've worked spit how to so it!!

Car's really nice by the way and the kids love the acceleration :)

Cheers

Simon

Sounds like you are enjoying it then

For radio info press one of the silver buttons (right one springs to mind) you’ll then get a menu for radio guide radio info etc.

There is no service book as Audi log the work electronically on their system. I just get an A4 print out of everything done to date at the time of each service eg a cumulative thing.

Picking up mine hopefully the end of the month from Oxford Audi. Any recommendations for places to get the auto watch ghost system fitted as think this is probably a must?

Cheers Paul

Had the Ghost system fitted by a firm based in Aylesbury - Mobile Systems 01296 688766. Chap who fitted it was really good. Paid £325 for cash :)

Sounds like the situation my brother had with Jag. He ordered a car, got the code, and watched it online go through the build process to arrival at the dealership over a four month period. So he rang them up to ask about collecting it when the dealer announced that Jaguar had discontinued the model and it wasn’t actually built! He could have the automatic version though with less options instead! After much arguing he managed to get the same colour, spec level with the auto box for the same price as the manual which cost Jaguar about 5K! They messed up about 1000 odd orders in the same way apparently. Of course, now he has to wait another four months too!
