I was looking to get some switched to make a homemade Homelink device for the RS3 and noticed the actual genuine Homelink kit is normally fitted at the port rather than at the factory and found you can buy the genuine kit to install. And it seems fairly easy other than having the cojones to cut a whole in your headlining.

Anyone on here tried it yet?

I'm curious as to what the homelink is mine? Am I right in saying it's purely to open a garage door? Or does it have other uses

Yes Jay, just opens the garage door or driveway gates or something similar. Nothing else.
It means you don't have to fumble around looking for the garage door opener, or finding out the remote battery has gone flat etc when it can be neatly installed next to the sun visor.
And for some reason it is not even available on the RS6 anymore, they removed the option at facelift time.

I had one of these that came with my garage door that simple goes into the cigarette lighter. I know it's exposed but at the end of the day if the car is garaged and an intruder finds their way inside the garage then they're able to open it from inside so doesn't matter so much being exposed. I've literally replaced my battery after 18 months, it doesn't just not work it gives you early signs when replacement is due

Thanks Jay. I saw a similar one and assumed it took the power from the lighter socket rather than needing a battery.

No mate battery operated. Either that or get one of the slim fobs and slide into your sun visor on the unseen side (where the homelink button would be)
